What is Safe Exam Browser (SEB)?

Safe exam browser (SEB) also known as lockdown browser or QBrowser is a technology that is installed onto candidate’s computer, limiting its some of the capabilities and adding additional monitoring and safety features to the exam. Safe exam browser turns candidate device into an exam kiosk during the exam, disabling ability to minimize screen, opening a new tab, and copying-pasting any text. This adds another security layer to the proctored online exam.

There is an important distinction between safe exam browser and proctoring software: safe exam browser does not have proctoring capabilities such as recording microphone and web camera activity or analyzing suspicious events. Safe exam browser’s primary duty is to lock the device to the exam screen. Proctoring itself is a completely different service and technology.

Main features of Safe Exam Browser (SEB)

These are the main features of safe exam browser:

  1. Enforcing full-screen: browser cannot be minimized or closed. Candidate cannot leave exam screen.

  1. Browser functionality limitations: opening new browser tab, visiting Google, using back and forward buttons or accessing URL bar are disabled.

  1. Copy-paste and screenshot block: candidate cannot use CTRL+C, CTRL-V, or screenshot features of a browser or device, they are all disabled.

  1. Unable to open other apps: candidate cannot open any other app on the device while taking the exam on safe exam browser.

  1. System commands: candidate cannot use system commands such as CTRL+ALT+DEL or ALT+F4.

  1. Entegration to popular LMS systems: Safe exam browser entegrates with the most popular LMS systems such as Moodle, Blackboard, and Canvas.

Safe exam browser can be used with personal devices so that exam security is maintained if bring-your-own-device (BYOD) is allowed in the exam. There are major benefits of using safe exam browser. It creates an equal examination environment for all candidates, and it does not interfere with personal data collection policies unless it is used together with proctoring software.
